Benjamin Evans is the author of Substance Abuse, a hard boiled mystery novel about trying to find a life in modern urban Britain. He grew up in Guildford in Surrey where he continues to live, and studied at Leeds University.

Benjamin writes about people trying to understand who they are and who they want to be in a world that depresses and disappoints at every stage. His plots deal with searches for identity and difference as the children of an accelerated culture grow up to find themselves in a world with the brakes slammed on, trapped in an unhappy balance of dissatisfaction and desire to consume.

His work is characterized by a sense of the philosophical, grounding the abnormal and the incredible in reality, albeit a different reality to the one we see every day. It is about looking behind and looking through, to see what is real and what isn't, to find hope and satisfaction away from the office, the High Street and from a world imploding in on itself.
